Rejoice Through It All-Psalm 13 Devotional

“O Lord, how long will you forget me? Forever? How long will you look the other way? How long must I struggle with anguish in my soul, with sorrow in my heart every day? How long will my enemy have the upper hand? Turn and answer me, O Lord my God! Restore the sparkle to my eyes, or I will die. Don’t let my enemies gloat, saying, “We have defeated him!” Don’t let them rejoice at my downfall. But I trust in your unfailing love. I will rejoice because you have rescued me. I will sing to the Lord because he is good to me.”

Psalms 13 NLT

I have been so overtaken with anxiety and panic that I have cried out to God and asked where He was. I have felt alone in the battles I have faced. I have wondered how long this anxiety and anguish would go on for.

I have pleaded with God. I have asked and asked.

In these seasons, I have both hardened my heart towards God and have shouted praises, rejoicing in His goodness.

When anxiety comes, when the battle drags on, when you feel defeated, David shows us that it’s okay to feel.

But then, after David expressed his feelings, David shows us that his feelings were valid but not the truth. He knew the truth, and so he rejoiced in that truth, proclaiming the character of God.

We need to rejoice in the One who rescues. The One who can be trusted. The One who deserves songs of praise. The One who loves us. The One who has been and is still good to us.

Take those feelings captive and remember God’s goodness in your life.

Maybe you’re in a battle right now, and you feel God is nowhere to be found. Sing songs of praise! Because God is with you. God is going to bring about a great victory. Trust His love for you.

Prayer:

Father God, you know all that I face. You know how I feel about it all. But right now, I choose to rejoice in you, despite how I feel. I choose to give you praise because you are the one big enough to hold all my fears, anxieties, and problems. Thank you for your enormous love and care for me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
