Where is God When I’m Afraid?

Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.

Deuteronomy 31:8

One of the biggest areas where I am stretched in my faith is when I’m in a car with another person driving, especially in the snow!

It’s not that I don’t trust the person driving; it’s that I’m not the one driving and in control of the vehicle.

On a road trip to Peoria with a group of friends, it snowed. Well, more like blizzarded entirely unexpectedly. Which if that wasn’t bad enough, try driving through a blizzard with a car that has no four-wheel drive.

Once on the interstate, the car started sliding. I can honestly say that I thought we were going to spin out of control. My heart dropped, and I instantly felt like this was the end.

Thoughts of not being ready to go started whirling around in my head. There was so much I still needed to do, to experience.

I wish I could tell you that I prayed hard in those moments, but that wouldn’t be the truth. While I did pray, I didn’t pray as if my life depended on it. Instead, I turned to my phone to distract me from the situation.

I started thinking about how many times my BC (before Christ) self risked her life. She risked her life by doing drugs, physically harming herself, drinking, putting herself in not so good situations, and not being surrounded by the best people. Overall, she made terrible choices. I’m alive today only by the grace of God. I never saw it back then, but it’s only because of him that I lived through all the dangerous, dumb decisions I made.

I could have died countless times. But by His grace, I didn’t.

My take away from this experience was, I don’t need to be afraid because God is always with me. No matter what I face, I can trust that God is with me.

I teach my kiddo’s at school that they don’t need to be afraid of the dark, snakes, bugs, rollercoasters, heights, etc. because God is always with them. But there I was, afraid even though God was with me.

The next time something happens in your life that makes you afraid, remember, God is with you. He will never leave you. He is faithful. He is good. He is strong. He is sovereign. Trust Him and lean on Him. He is a great refuge.

Let’s lean on Him together.

Reflection:

What is something that you’re currently afraid of or have been afraid of?
How can you trust God with that fear or how have you trusted God with your fears?

My take away: Always be ready because you never know when is your last day here on earth. Fully trust God, not only to watch over you and protect you but also trust Jesus with your salvation. Once you are saved, it doesn’t matter what happens or when because you will always be ready to meet Him face to face.
