Where Does Your Hope Come From?

“Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will not be shaken. My victory and honor come from God alone. He is my refuge, a rock where no enemy can reach me. O my people, trust in him at all times. Pour out your heart to him, for God is our refuge.”

Psalm 62:5-8

All too often, I catch myself putting my hope in people, places, and things. And when they leave me disappointed and unsatisfied, my spirit feels crushed.

Where does your hope come from? Maybe the better question is, who should I put my hope in?

The God almighty.
The maker of heaven and earth.
The one who is faithful.
The alpha and the omega.
The king of kings.
The savior of the world.

He’s the only one we should put our hope in. He is the only one we can trust. He is the only one big enough. He is the only one who knows what we need. He is the only one who can satisfy.

  • When your kids are making bad choices, you can put your hope in God, not your kids.
  • When your husband doesn’t love you the way you want him to, you can put your hope in God, not your husband.
  • When your marriage isn’t what you thought it would be, you can put your hope in God, not in you and your spouse.
  • When your friend is turning away from the Lord, you can put your hope in God, not your friend.
  • When you’re working so hard towards a goal and haven’t seen any results yet, you can put your hope in God, not in yourself.
  • When the world seems to be taking a turn for the worst, you can put your hope in God, not in the world.
  • When your job is making changes out of your control, you can put your hope in God, not in your job.

When we put our faith in God, it takes the weight off our shoulders and puts it on the Lord. We can’t fix anything on our own. We can’t change people. We can’t change the situations we are in. We can’t make people see things differently. All of that is the Lord’s job. He is the only one who can bring a real and lasting change. I’m not saying that we shouldn’t do our part towards change and growth. I am saying that we can do nothing without God and that He is the way maker, miracle worker, and promise keeper.

Once we put our hope in God alone, our friend, our husband, our kids, our marriage, our jobs, the world, and even ourselves, can’t disappoint us because our hope wasn’t in those things and people in the first place. Our faith is in God to do a mighty work in them and in us. He takes the pressure off of us and puts it on Himself.
